Dugong Lodge was the perfect place to end our trip around South Africa and Mozambique. The location is beautiful, the food amazing, the rooms pristine and the staff extremely helpful. There are various trips and activities – we tried the sailing and the dhow cruise both of which we enjoyed – but the place is mainly one for relaxing. Ashley, Mashall and Wayne were all very friendly and did their upmost to ensure we enjoyed our stay. It is not cheap but the price is justified for this level of excellence.
We had a lovely start to our honeymoon here. Ashley, Marshall & Wayne were great hosts and all the staff were very friendly & helpful – nothing was too much trouble. The food was fantastic (thanks Ashley!) and we felt thoroughly relaxed during and at the end of our stay. Slept amazingly well in the lovely room too! We had a great time sailing, snorkelling, kayaking and visited a local village too. Our only criticism was that some aspects felt a little tired and old for the price (e.g. Watersports equipment) and also that there isn’t much of a beach depending on the tides. But the service more than makes up for this. Thank you to you all! Susanna & Oliver
We have just returned from a five night stay at Dugong Beach Lodge. The pickup at Vilanculos airport was very efficient and the 45 minute boat trip was very good. Do be prepared for a ‘wet’ landing and wear appropriate clothes and shoes.
What more can be said about the beautiful lodges, the very friendly staff, the most delicious food and the perfect surroundings? Dugong is on the mainland but felt like it was an island. In fact on a very high tide it is surrounded by water.
This is a wonderful place to go and do absolutely nothing but relax.
We enjoyed an 8 night stay here, it was everything we had hoped for.The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished, the bed is large and comfortable, and there are 2 showers, inside and out, and a lovely bath. The deck area has tables and chairs, and each room has a lovely sea view, some have extra little cabanas nearer the water, lovely to watch the sunset.
We wanted a quiet peaceful break, and this is what we got.The food was simple and delicious, and the portions generous. All meals are taken on the main deck when the weather allows.
There is plenty to do ,if you wish, Swimming, snorkeling off the beach at the pier, best when the tide is in.There is more adventurous snorkeling a boat trip away. Also fishing trips, sunset cruises, picnics, and nature drives and walks.
The lodge is run by managers Ashley and Marshall, assisted by their little dog Jessie. It is well run ,with friendly helpful staff, who do their best to deliver the experience you want there. Having been to one of the more expensive island lodges previously, Dugong for us was a nicer lodge, with a far better atmosphere.
The only negative thing I have to say is that this lodge does, in common with other lodges, sometimes have “incentive” groups who can be noisy and inconsiderate, but we were always able to escape them in the 2 days they were there, the lodge area is large enough so they didn’t worry us at all.
Hope we are able to come back one day! We really had a lovely few days there, and highly recommend it for a chill out break. Many thanks, Ashley and Marshall.
We were truly spoilt for 5 days! The best meals we have had in a long time, always freshly prepared and super tasty, served with a humble smile. An island picnic out of the colonial era on the beautifull white beaches.Forget about Mauritius or Maldives, this is it!
Dugong Lodge is paradise! We spent part of our honeymoon there and we were treated like royalty from the moment we arrived up until the moment we departed. The attention to detail and personalised service is outstanding. The rooms are tastefully decorated and are large and spacious. All the rooms have spectacular views and provide adequate privacy. We loved the outdoor shower and the beautiful bath that you can soak in while watching the tide come in. The food is outstanding and you will never go hungry with Ashley around. The staff at Dugong (and I mean all of them!) really make it such a special place, nothing is ever too much trouble. As much as the staff are all very professional, there is a very personal aspect to their service approach and you feel at home right from the start. I would highly recommend Dugong Lodge for a honeymoon getaway and we would love to return.
I have only recently returned from Dugong Lodge. I had the privilege of going up with some of my colleagues for an incentive trip and followed this with my family joining me afterwards.
I can categorically say that this was one of the best venues we have ever been to. Nothing was too much trouble for the very helpful staff, the food was out of this world and the accommodation very comfortable.
As for the family visit, we cannot wait to arrange a follow up visit. Thanks to Wayne, Marshall, Ashley and all your wonderful staff. The Haynes’s
A fantastic place from start to finish. Friendly attentive staff, relaxed, efficient management, amazing accomodation and the most beautiful quiet place you can imagine, all set in a conservation reserve with over 60 head of game – zebra, duiker etc no predators!!. After a hectic safari holiday we have previously visited Mauritius and Sun City for a few days to unwind and relax – not any more. From now on it’ll be Dugong Beach every time. Perfect to simply unwind, do nothing, whilst being looked after royally by the great management and staff.
Don’t let the generator issue put you off – it’s really not a problem and there is electricity whenever you need it – I even watched most of the Ryder Cup!! The rest of the time we simply relaxed interspersed with a swin or a snorkel, dolphin watching, and the odd glass of wine!! If you want somewhere to simply get away from it all in luxury, put yourself in the hands of Wayne, Diane, Didi and the rest of the team and visit Dugong beach – perfect!!
Vilanculos is not the cleanest of towns, but a forty minute trip across the bay and we arrived in the most magical place. it is isolated on a peninsula which is a wildlife conservation area. The rooms are luxurious with four poster beds, large en-suite and a private outdoor shower. All this and a balcony leading out to the Indian Ocean and amazing sunsets. The main area was tastefully laid out, and the food (inclusive) was first rate with lots of seafood and the most amazing Mozambique prawns.
Water sports include free use of HobyCats and kayaks, and the other trips are great fun. The snorkelling is not the best mainly because the reef is still recovering from a cyclone 4 years ago. A dhow trip through the mangroves is well worth it,as is a trip to shell beach (miles of empty sand with lots of shells) and the deep sea fishing was exciting. We didn’t catch any marlin but made up for it with dorade and a great local game fish called a prodigal son, as well as sightings of whale shark, turtles, manta ray and dolphins.
what really made it so special for us were the staff, who looked after us so well, and were anticipating our needs after a couple of days. By the end of our 9 days we really felt part of the family, and the two women in our party were in tears when we left.
if you want night life and crowds don’t bother, but if you want to be pampered and enjoy nature, peace and a beautiful location, then this little piece of paradise is for you.
we will return!!
If you are looking for noisy nightlife, this is not the place for you. Dugong Beach Lodge is reached via a rather scruffy Vilanculos followed by a 40 minute boat trip to the most peaceful place on earth. The staff are, without exception, wonderful. The accomodation is luxurious. We ate like kings, enjoyed perfect weather, swam in clear warm sea, idled in an exotic infinity pool, treated ourselves to a deep sea fishing trip, made good use of the complimentary kayaks and and sailing boats . I could go on. Gary, our host , was constantly in evidence. We hated leaving and intend to return. Do hope it hasn’t become too popular.
